➡️ WTH is Average Order Value (AOV)?

Imagine you’re at your favorite local café. 🍵

You’re about to order your usual latte when the barista says,

“Hey! Try our new pastry with it, it’s delicious!”

You think, why not? 🍰🍰

But you know, this little nudge just increased their average order value (AOV).

So, what exactly is AOV? In simple terms, it's the average amount spent every time a customer places an order on your site.

Calculating AOV is easy. Just take your total revenue and divide it by the number of orders. For example, if your store made $10,000 from 200 orders, your AOV is $50.

Just like any other marketing metric, this too has its kinds, like Mean, Median, and Mode. Just to give you an idea of what each kind of AOV means—

  • Mean AOV - just the normal average order value

  • Median AOV- Rank all your orders and select the middle value.

  • Mode AOV - Sort your order values numerically and select the amount that occurs most frequently.

Now that you know what is AOV, Wondering what a good AOV is?🤔

Check out this study by Growcode, they dived into 10 different economic studies and nailed down $128 as the desired AOV for e-commerce.

$128! OMG, I’m not even at $20 right now?!!

Don’t stress about it, chill.
It varies by industry, but generally, the higher, the better.

It means customers are spending more per transaction. Ultimately, it’s all about profits.

➡️Why AOV Matters in eCommerce

Because it can increase your revenue without needing more customers. Higher AOV means more money per order, better returns on marketing spend, and improved cash flow.

If you just focus on some proven ways + a little creative effort instead of spending lakhs to acquire new customers, you get a lot more value from your existing ones.

Enough of talking, now let’s dive into the real matter. 📌📌

➡️ 5 Tricks to Boost AOV-

1) Bundle Products

Think of bundling packs like offering a combo meal, just like McDonald’s.

Instead of selling items individually, you group them at a slightly reduced price.

For example, if you run an online beauty store, bundle a face wash, toner, and moisturizer together. Customers feel they’re getting more value, and you get a bigger sale.

2) Upsell and Cross-Sell

Ever noticed how Amazon suggests products frequently bought together? For instance, if someone buys a laptop, suggest a mouse or a carrying case.

This is upselling and cross-selling. When a customer adds an item to their cart, recommend a higher-end version (upsell) or complementary products (cross-sell).

3) Create a Loyalty Program

People love to feel valued, right? Loyalty programs do just that.

Offer points or rewards for every purchase that customers can redeem for discounts or free products. The idea is to encourage repeat purchases and higher spending. Think of Sephora’s Beauty Insider program that gives points for every dollar spent, leading to bigger purchases to get more points.

4) Personalize Recommendations

Personalization can totally change how a user behaves. Use data to understand your customers’ preferences and recommend products tailored to their tastes. This can be done through email or directly on your site.

Take Tiffany and Co for example, they allow customers to engrave jewelry items for an additional $5- often pushing up the order value by up to 5%.

5) Offer a Free Shipping Threshold

Here’s a clever one. Instead of giving away free shipping on all orders, set a minimum purchase amount to qualify for free shipping.

This pushes customers to add more items to their cart to meet the threshold. For instance, if your free shipping threshold is $75, and a customer’s cart totals $60, they’re likely to add an additional $15 worth of products to avoid the shipping fee.

This not only increases your AOV but also boosts overall sales. And speaking of shipping, while free shipping can be a great incentive, it’s not always the best strategy. Instead, consider using discount coupons for shipping, which we observe from today’s case study from Ariyh.

Free Shipping vs Discount coupons on shipping — Source Ariyh

Don’t communicate that shipping is free (e.g. don’t mention “Free shipping” on your product pages).

In experiments both in the lab and with 771,776 customers of a large European online retailer, researchers found that:

  • Free shipping increased spending by 0.83%, but increased returns by 1.2%

  • The increase in returns was driven by more sales of products that are at high risk of being returned (e.g. fashion, cosmetics), but sales of products at low risk of being returned (e.g. vacuum cleaner bags, storage boxes, mirrors) did not increase

  • Credit coupons increased sales of both types of coupons, without increasing return rates

For every 10,000 customers, the company that uses:

  • Free shipping (vs paid shipping), causes a loss of €80.42 (or .7%).

  • Credit coupons (vs paid shipping), increase profit by €701.99 (6%).
