Is SEO dead? Time for GEO

Well, first of all — SEO isn’t dead. Things are evolving. They are just evolving faster than we can comprehend. Especially with how we prefer… AI-based responses to our questions COMPARED TO the boring way of searching for something and having to open up 10 links to read through them all to find our answers.

Phew, exhaustive ol’ days.

The way content is consumed has fundamentally changed. And that is frightening for search engines’ business models.

Fewer people search on search platforms (Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc) and more on AI platforms (like ChatGPT). This also poses a significant challenge for website and content creators, because this can bypass the need for users to visit websites, potentially reducing organic traffic and visibility that website would get.

So, the search engines quickly adapted and embedded AI into the search experience — generative search experience.

This is very powerful because I get the power of search engines + creativity and smartness of an AI. But, the point for us as marketers is to be the ones whose website information is shown through the generative search experience. Here’s another example —

Imagine if ChatGPT starts recommending your products. That would be a goldmine of traffic you can start getting from there.

Enough of hyping… what is GEO?

Imagine you have a magic box (Generative Engines like Google's Bard or Bing with ChatGPT) that can write almost any text you ask it to. You tell it what you need, and it searches through its massive library of books, articles, and websites to give you a good answer.

Now, if you're someone who creates content for websites, you'd want this magic box to mention your website when someone asks it a question related to what you've written about, right? That's where GEO comes in.

Like SEO — which involves making our website more attractive to search engine algorithms, GEO involves making your website more attractive to the generative engines.

Here is how to do GEO based on super early research we have so far —

1) Optimize content for quality and relevance: Generative engines synthesize information from various sources. So ensuring your content is high quality, accurate, and directly relevant to common queries in your domain is essential. Use authoritative sources, accurate statistics, and clear, understandable language.

To me, this sounds like one more reason to niche down your content and use more long-tail keywords.

2) Engaging content: GEs prioritize content that engages users. This means creating content that answers questions comprehensively, encourages exploration, and includes more actionable insights. So - focus on creating content that answers “how” and “why” questions.

The research also says that you should adopt a confident and authoritative tone in your content.

3) Use structured data and rich snippets: Implementing structured data on your website can help GEs understand the context and content of your pages better and quicker. That makes it more likely for your information to be pulled into a response.

4) Beyond just text, think about optimizing the overall presentation of your content. Use multimedia elements and ensure it is accessible across different devices. You can learn more about rich snippets through this Backlinko article.

Based on this research paper, here’s how you increase your chances:

Green highlights represent new additions to the content and the ‘relative improvement’ suggests improvements in GE picking up the piece of content.

1) Citing sources within the content improves the chances of your content being picked by over 130%.
2) Addin statistics to your content improves GEO by 65% and…
3) Being authoritative improves GEO by 89%.

How to measure effectiveness?

Well, find out your referral traffic sources through GA, SEMrush, or Similarweb and look for this —

So, well, to conclude… think of GEO as a marketing strategy that complements SEO and works hand-in-hand. We’re still very early on in this whole thing. If you’re here and reading this, kudos for being an early mover and adapter!

A ChatGPT prompt that writers Instagram Captions

Copy and paste the Prompt in ChatGPT.

Craft engaging and relatable Instagram captions that strike a balance between fun and conversational while maintaining a human touch. Emojis can be used sparingly, with a focus on keeping the captions concise and easy to read.

Suggestions:

1) Encourage the use of one or two emojis, if necessary, to add personality to the captions.
2) Incorporate relevant pop culture references or trending topics to make the captions relatable to the target audience.
3) Ensure the captions reflect any specific brand guidelines or tone of voice.
4) Always provide multiple options / versions to select from.

You may ask these questions to start with:

1) What is the media (and its primary focus or theme that this caption will go with? Describe the video / image briefly.
2) Who is the target audience on Instagram?
3) Are there any specific brand guidelines or tone of voice that should be reflected in the captions?
