➡️ WTH is Storytelling?
At its heart, storytelling is just explaining something in an engaging way.
How?
Use vivid pictures created by words…
play with emotions a bit (make them laugh or give them goosebumps)
throw in a twist or two to keep it exciting.
Give your talk / thought / content a storyline. Give it a little flavour.
That’s it, but…
Why? Why do we tell stories?
Well, they connect us. They teach us lessons while giving us a good laugh.
They make…
the abstract → real
the boring → interesting
the complex → simple.
Because it’s not just what you say, but how you say it that truly matters.
Okay Okay, then. Sold. I get it. Tell stories. But…
How?
Well, to many, stories come naturally. Every word they speak sounds like a script from an award-winning movie. So, do you have that magical power?
If so, you don’t have to read below.
If not, there are frameworks you can follow.
Here’s one → one of the basic ones called BAB. Before-after-bridge.
Before: Describe the world before (your product). Highlight the problems or pain points that your audience faces.
Set the stage for the need for change. After: Paint a picture of the world after your product has been used. This should be a positive contrast to the "before" scenario.
Showcase the benefits and improvements.Bridge: Explain how your product or service bridges the gap between the ‘before’ and ‘after’.
Detail the functionality or the USP that makes the transformation.
It doesn’t really need to be a product as “the bridge”. You could be talking about an event or a person that becomes the bridge.
Another framework is called the Hero’s Journey:
Ordinary World: Establish the hero's normal life and environment.
Call to Adventure: Present the challenge that disrupts normal life.
The Change: Introduce someone or something that provides guidance or advice. It could be a mentor, a friend, or a romantic partner.
Crossing the Threshold: The hero commits and steps into the unknown.
Tests and Allies: The hero faces challenges. Meets allies and enemies.
The Final Reward: The hero confronts and wins a major challenge (the last challenge or the final boss like in games) — and receives a reward.
Return Home: The hero returns to their ordinary world but is transformed by the experience and is a new person now.
Think of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.
It follows the Hero's Journey framework effectively.
Here’s how —
Harry starts in his ordinary world, living with his abusive aunt and uncle, the Dursleys. His call to adventure comes when he receives a letter from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Hagrid, the mentor, introduces Harry to the magical world and helps him get ready for school. Harry crosses the threshold by boarding the Hogwarts Express and entering Hogwarts. There, he faces tests, makes friends with Ron and Hermione, and learns about his parents and his own magical abilities.
“The test” occurs when Harry confronts Professor Quirrell and Voldemort to protect the Sorcerer's Stone. Finally, Harry returns home to the Dursleys for the summer, now confident in his identity and ready for future adventures.
What’s the point?
The point is to write your content, talk, copy, etc starting with a story.
That becomes the hook.
Let’s say I am giving a talk about leadership.
"Resilience and community are important aspects of life and leadership. Today, I will discuss why these qualities matter and how they can transform your perspective."
Mehhhh, boring. 👎👎👎

Giphy
Or, I could go…
"Imagine being in the middle of a storm, your house is shaking, and you’re all alone. This was my reality during the hurricane last year. But it was during those moments of fear that I discovered my true resilience and the importance of community. Today, I want to share how that experience transformed my perspective on life and leadership."
A better start, isn’t it? You are already visualizing me in a storm, dark evening, house shaking. Power of story — gets you in on it. Makes you a part of it.
In other thoughts…
Use smile-like lines in your designs
Use an upward curving line on your product packaging or logo - like a smile - instead of downward facing or straight lines. People will like your product more and will be more likely to buy it.
Seeing something we interpret as a (smiling) face influences how we react to the item. A subliminal smile, like an upward curved line, can increase our desire to use a product and how much we’re willing to spend on it.
